Artist of the Month: Black Kids
With danceable, catchy songs reminiscent of a mix between The Cure and Arcade Fire, Jacksonville, Florida's indie outfit Black Kids have received a heavy dose of critical acclaim, blogger buzz, and the inevitable backlash over the past year.
The band, who made it on to the indie music map with the singles "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You" and "Hurricane Jane" (see link below) is now under enormous pressure with the upcoming release of their debut album, and fans and critics will be expecting more than just a hurried release containing a set of mediocre songs.
However, it is important to note that the band's 'debut' only contains three new songs. That is not something that works in the band's favor or will necessarily sell more records than an album that contains a full set of new songs.
It's always amusing, and somehow pretentious, for the naysayers of indie rock 'sensations' - as Black Kids have become - to conveniently praise a talented new band and then turn around and bash them for becoming popular, which is sort of what I'm doing here, but not really, because overall, their music speaks for itself - and does a fine job at that.
If they were pretentious and in-your-face about their indie stardom, as some musicians are, that would be a different story. So far, all indications point to an amazingly creative and exciting band with catchy sound and name.
If you are not familiar with Black Kids, you can listen to this free MP3 from Black Kids and also following some of the music links to stream their music, get more information about the band and access their playlists on various social networking sites.

The Fleet Foxes Mix Indie Pop, Acoustic, Folk and Harmonic Vocals For Entralling Sounds
Drawing strongly off influences from The Beach Boys, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Young and The Zombies, The Fleet Foxes are one of the most exciting new indie bands of 2008.
Fleet Foxes' debut, self-titled album is nothing less than a masterpiece woven with carefully-crafted songs about longing and lost love lavishly laden with pop harmonies and melodies.
"They are, for lack of an imminently more marketable descriptor, a group trafficking in baroque harmonic pop," the band's profile on Sub Pop reads, highlighting "traditions of folk music, pop, choral music and gospel, sacred harp singing, West Coast music, traditional music from Ireland to Japan, film scores."
Heather Phares wrote in the All Music Guide: "[Fleet Foxes] mix and match British and American folk and rock from the far and not too distant past that makes the band's music so refreshing.
The band comprises Skyler Skjelset on guitar, Bryn Lumsden on bass, Nicholas Peterson on drums, and Casey Wescott on keyboards. Following some solid shows in Seattle, the band was was contacted by producer Phil Ek, who produced The Shins and Built to Spill.
Ek produced the bands spring 2008 EP release, Sun Giant, and the band's debut full-length album for Sub Pop Records.
MP3: "White Winter Hymna" by The Fleet Foxes off the self-titled album on Sub Pop Records, released in June 2008.
Sub Pop also has in its lineup of artists many great indie bands and artists like Grand Archives, Iron & Wine, Foals, The Go! Team, Bands of Horses, The Postal Service, Sleater-Kinney, CSS, Mudhoney, The Rapture, Wolf Parade, Low, Rogue Wave and dozens more.
Seattle is etched in rock history as the birthplace of alternative rock, most especially in respect to "grunge" - a musical genre that captivated a generation for half of a decade thanks in large part to the explosive success of Nirvana.
For the baby boom generation, The Beatles were band that defined a generation. For the mislabeled "Generation X" there is no other band that can compare to the enormous influence and success of The Beatles except for Kurt Cobain and Nirvana.
But in recent years, the caffeinated city of Seattle, has been the breeding ground for new, more mellow indie rock and pop that draws heavily off musical trends established during the baby boomers heydays. The Fleet Foxes definitely appeal to a wide audience because of their amazing range in styles and sounds and introspective lyrics.

NPR's Best Albums of 2008 Poll Features The Dodos, The Black Keys, Fleet Foxes, Mates of State, The Mars Volta and More
Why? Because it is only common sense to wait until the end of the year before asking your readers what their favorite albums of the year are. My reply to NPR's end-of-the-year poll: Seriously? At the least, from an elementary editorial POV, could you rename the poll to "The Best Albums of 2008, Part One"?
However, to its credit, NPR's music division consistently singles out some of the most talented indie and mainstream bands and artists around, including The Black Keys, Colin Meloy, Conor Oberst, The Dodos, Coldplay, Mates of State, My Morning Jacket, The Raveonettes, REM, Tokyo Police Club and Weezer, among many others.
The poll closes on July 2. There is a lively discussion going regarding the poll and the best albums of 2008 (so far).

Firewater's The Golden Hour Features Music Genres Mixed with International Influences
MP3: "6:45 (So This Is How It Feels)" by Firewater from The Golden Hour
Firewater: Founded, 1995
Firewater's 1995 debut album, Get Off The Cross (We Need The Wood For The Fire), was not well received by critics and the band failed to gain a notable following.
It wasn't until 2001's pop-heavy Psychopharmacology, featuring saxophonist Ori Kaplan and sitar player Oren Bloedow, that the band made a breakthrough, receiving wide praise, including a 3.5 star rating from the All Music Guide.
"Psychopharmacology contains the requisite disgruntlement of a Firewater album, and all of angst-ridden underpinnings of testosterone-laced pop."
It doesn't hurt that over the past couple of years indie rock music featuring sounds from other cultures and instruments has gained popularity, evidenced by popular indie artists like Beirut, The Decemberists and Vampire Weekend, to name a few.
The downside of Firewater's collective music catalogue is that much of it sounds too much like the Squirrel Nut Zippers, and at times conjures up images of a drunken Uncle Bob attempting to dance in the backyard after an outdoor barbecue, when most of the guests have already left.

New Indie Rock Songs, June 2008: The Fleet Foxes, Celestial, The Afternoons, The Mars Volta, Destroyer, The Jukebox Ghost, Tyler Ramsey and More
It is literally impossible for any one blogger - much less a staffed music publication - to seek, listen to, review, write and post all of the great music that comes from the 'indie' music world.
So, in the spirit of supporting indie music, here is a collection of recent free MP3 songs from indie artists, including one of this year's new 'buzz' bands (and well deserved at all), The Fleet Foxes, plus Celestial, The Afternoons, The Mars Volta, Destroyer, The Jukebox Ghost, The April Skies and Band of Horses guitarist Tyler Ramsey.
Of course, The Beach Boys are famous for creating some of the biggest summer time hit songs in rock history. Nevertheless, Fleet Foxes has carved out its own piece of the musical landscape, and were a favorite at this year's South by Southwest festival in Austin.
MP3: "Say Yes" by The Afternoons from Los Angeles, CA
MP3: "Wax Simulacra" by The Mars Volta from Los Angeles, CA from the album Bedlam in the Goliath
MP3: "Hold It In" by Jukebox The Ghost from Washington, DC off their debut album Let Live and Let Ghosts
MP3: "When The Leaf is Not Green" by Astrolab from Bandung, West Java, Indonesia
MP3: "Madame Butterflies" by Destroyer from Vancouver, Canada. You'll need to be logged in or register to download the song.
Other 2008 Indie MP3s
MP3: "How It All Played Out" by The April Skies from Hershey, Pennsylvania off the album How It All Played Out
MP3: "Ships" by Tyler Ramsey (guitarist for Band of Horses) from Asheville, North Carolina off the album A Long Dream About Swimming Across the Ocean (Echo Mountain Records)
Note: MP3 links may expire or be removed. A label or artist who wants an MP3 link removed, see IRC's MP3 policy below. IRC encourages listeners to buy music, and attend concerts, from artists and bands they enjoy.
Increasingly, rock radio stations play 'indie rock' and more so-called indie bands and artists are getting mainstream press as the popularity of indie grows. One sign of the explosion of indie rock is the number of rock festivals that are overwhelming packed with what are mostly indie music artists and musicians.
The definition of what constitutes indie music is definitely not set in stone, and it means different things to different people, but it's generally accepted that indie music is created by bands and artists who are signed, or not signed at all, with an independent record labels.

Bonnaroo Music Festival 2008 Music Videos featuring Metallica and Battles
It's hard to believe there are only two days left in the four-day Bonnaroo Festival. So far, Bonnaroo fest goers have seen a variety of bands and musicians including Metallica, The Raconteurs, My Morning Jacket, Steve Marley, Battles, Jose Gonzales, Rilo Kiley, Willie Nelson, Tegan and Sara, MIA, The Swell Season, Les Claypool, Minus The Bear.
Here are some of the best YouTube videos from Bonnaroo from Thursday and Friday. Surprisingly, there are very few videos from Bonnaroo, unless you want to watch slices taped off a computer of the webcast.

Bonnaroo Music Festival 2008 Kicks Off Thursday with Superdrag, Vampire Weekend, Battles and MGMT
Thousands of music and arts enthusiasts are gathering in the beautiful foothills of Tennessee to enjoy four days of music, arts and plenty more. Bonnaroo is one of the largest festivals in the United States and the first major festival of the 2008 summer season.
In recent years, Bonnaroo has become as well known as other big music and arts festivals like Lollapalooza, Coachella and Austin City Limits.
But Bonnaroo does not start of with a bang. The line up for the first day of the festival pales in comparison to the artists and bands set to perform this weekend.
For the Thursday kick-off, bands like Vampire Weekend, Superdrag, Battles, and MGMT are scheduled to play - all of these in the so-called "This Tent". The other 'stages', or tents, feature lesser known artists, or bands and musicians that have a comparably small or local following, such as Lez Zeppelin, Dark Star Orchestra, Grand Ole Party and The Felice Brothers.
MP3: MGMT - "Destrokk"
For music fans that have never heard The Battles, check out this driving electronic rock video titled "Atlas". It has been viewed over one million times.
It's not much of a surprise that the first day of the festival, being that it is a Thursday, is not loaded up with must-see bands. Furthermore, the music doesn't even get started until early evening.
Nevertheless, on Friday, June 13, Bonnaroo becomes the epicenter of a wide array of impressive bands and artists, including The Raconteurs, Metallica, My Morning Jacket, Drive-By Truckers, Steve Marley, Jose Gonzales, Rilo Kiley, Willie Nelson, Tegan and Sara, MIA, The Swell Season, !!!, MSTRKRFT, Tiesto, Les Claypool, Minus The Bear and almost a dozen others.
Tegan and Sara performing "Back In Your Head" (YouTube video)
The only problem, and this is the problem with most festivals that have multiple stages, is that you are almost guaranteed to miss some of your favorite artists or bands because they perform simultaneously in different locations. That's why pouring over the schedule in advance and mapping where you want to be and when is so important to maximizing your musical experience.
With that said, and to the credit of the organizers, Bonnaroo is one of the top music festivals at which who plays where and when has been scheduled in such a way that most festival goers will have the opportunity to see most of the 'big name' performers in their genre (i.e. indie rock) without too much overlap.
Another cool thing about Bonnaroo is that headliners play very long sets (Metallica is playing for 2 1/2 hours and My Morning Jacket is playing for three hours) and the music goes well into the wee hour mornings, when the summer sky is full of stars and the cooler night time air makes for a wonderful experience.

Music Video Highlights from Live 105 BFD Fest 2008 in Mt. View
Another change to this year's BFD was the fact that the venue was slightly moved around with the stages being set up in the parking lot area. There is still no official explanation for this, but it may have limited the number of tickets sold over last year.
On top of all of that, the 2007 BFD had a better line-up than this year's show, as many fans and reviewers have pointed out (including the San Jose Mercury News): Interpol, Social Distortion, AFI, Bloc Party, The National, Kings of Leon, CSS, Queens of the Stone Age and many others.
But again, for only $10 a pop, it's no wonder this year's BFD sold out, but it would have been a much better festival if they had anywhere near the same amazing line-ups as years past; and people would have paid the $30 or more for more headlining acts - that is pretty apparent from what so many are saying.
Based on the number of new festivals this year, it is not a stretch to conclude that BFD organizers had a hard time filling the line-up with 'top name' bands and artists for this year's event, and thus, the lower price for tickets.
Additionally, they make more money from advertising and vendors than the tickets anyways. Therefore, as one very disappointed past-BFD fan wrote, it's not like the festival-goer is really getting a break, especially if the line-up is such a drag compared to previous BFDs.
So far, there is not a very good selection of YouTube videos to show - which is amazing considering the Bay Area is a major tech and music center of the world. Perhaps, more videos of BFD 2008 will surface later on, but for now, here's the IRC picks:

Weezer Releases New Album "Red" (aka "#6")
five million times on YouTube alone in just one week!
Few bands were as successful and influential during the post-grunge explosion of alternative rock during the mid-1990's as was Weezer.
The band's eponymous self-titled "Blue Album" debut in 1994 made them a near-overnight sensation, helped along by a series of enormously popular MTV music videos. Critics and fans were instantly attracted to Weezer's refreshing, yet somewhat geeky and poppy brand of alternative rock music.
Soon after the release of the "Blue Album", Hollywood legend Spike Jonze directed the group's first hit video, "Undone (The Sweater Song)", featuring films of the band spliced with scenes from the generational hit TV series Happy Days. The "Undone" music video put the band on a nearly endless rotation on MTV for months.
Other songs from the debut album, including hits like "Buddy Holly" and "Say It Ain't So", dominated college radio station playlists, and even seeped into the otherwise "cookie-cutter" rock radio markets from Los Angeles to London and New York to Melbourne.
Now, 14 years since their historic "Blue Album" debut, Weezer - with only a couple of original band members remaining and large gaps in the creation of new material - have released their long awaited new release.
The self-titled "Red Album" (aka, #6) was officially released this week. Already, "Red" has received largely positive reviews from the music press, bloggers and fans, following months of anticipation, rumors, leaks and wild speculation.
The following are new MP3s from "Red".
MP3: "Pork & Beans" by Weezer from the new "Red Album"
MP3: "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn)" by Weezer from "Red Album"
MP3s are not guaranteed to work and have been provided by the blog Quick Before it Melts - the hint is in the name. If you enjoy these songs, definitely show your love and purchase the band's albums whichever way you obtain your music - whether via an online music service or by visiting your local record shop.
The limited Deluxe Edition of "Red" contains four bonus tracks with a special digipak featuring a deluxe booklet of lyrics, photos, liner notes and the band members' thoughts about the new songs.
Red Album Track Listing (from Geffen Records):
1 - Troublemaker 2:45
2 - The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn) 5:52
3 - Pork And Beans [Album Version] 3:11
4 - Heart Songs 4:06
5 - Everybody Get Dangerous 4:03
6 - Dreamin' 5:12

Interestingly enough, MTV has named Weezer the "Buzzworthy Artist of the Week" (for June 2, 2008) and produced a series of video clips (see below) to celebrate the band's new release.
Yet, in 1997, MTV pretty much abandoned the "Weezer sound" after years of a mutually rewarding relationship by changing its format to embrace the emerging popularity of hip-hop.
The legendary AllMusic Guide summed it up by describing how Weezer's sophomore album, Pinkerton, failed to generate the enthusiastic response that "Blue" had, and "MTV and modern rock radio had withdrawn their support not only to Weezer, but their style of guitar-driven punk-pop in general."
Years after its release, Pinkerton - now considered a classic by some hardcore Weezer fans - was unearthed by a new generation of so-called 'emo' lovers, and "their audience grew despite not having a new album in the stores" for five long years (until 2001's "Green Album" and the 2002 release of Maladroit).
Following Maladroit, the band set off for another hiatus (releasing only one mediocre album Make Believe in 2005 that contained the mainstream radio single "Beverly Hills") consumed by side projects. The temporary parting of ways by the band members fueled speculation that the band had broken up.
Weezer has certainly gone through a metamorphosis since 1994, yet the release of the "Red Album" is proof that the band can still deliver a quirky and unique brand of alternative rock to the pleasure of long-time fans while also appealing to a new generation of media saturated music lovers.

San Francisco rock radio station Live 105 kicks off its annual all-day music festival next week, Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mt. View, California.
This is one of the best day-long music festivals in the United States considering the ticket price - a mere $10 - and the range of popular indie artists playing at the 10-hour festival. Talk about bang for the buck!
Tickets are on sale now. IRC does not endorse any ticketing outlets, but you can click BFD ticketing (links to Google results) to find tickets.
If it is like it was last year, you can also take a chance and show up to get free tickets. People in blue coats were handing out free tickets at the gate shortly after 1 pm.
If that doesn't happen, you'll probably still be able to buy tickets at the box office, or if worse comes to worse, find one a scalper.
