  • This is the finale for the Halloween Indie Rock Songs playlist mix series (back to regular programming on Monday with a lot of great new music). Unlike the other mixes, Vol. 13 is not limited to 13 songs because there are just too many left over to share with all of you. What better way to start off the last mix than with the newest track from Radiohead, "These Are My Twisted Words."

Following Radiohead is a track from Of Montreal (photo, above), plus a song from the now-defunct indie supergroup called the North American Halloween Prevention Initiative. The song, "Do They Know It's Halloween?" was co-written by Islands, and ex-Unicorns, member Nicholas Diamonds along with an ensemble that included members of bands like Arcade Fire, Rilo Kiley, Wolf Parade, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beck, Sonic Youth, Les Savy Fav, Buck 65 and Peaches.

Great Halloween-Theme Songs Exclusively from 2009

"Heads" is the first UK radio single from the Herm's 2009 album, Monsters. The song's bopping sound cleverly disguises its otherwise ghoulishly odd lyrics that suggest cannibalism of the author himself, who strangely seems to find solace in his own demise: Step one/rub me down with grease/step two/cook me in the fire/Step three/cut me into pieces/eat me when I’m done.

"Heads" - Herm from Monsters (2009)

"Land of Freak" - King Khan and The Shrines from From What Is?! (2009)

In 1981, The Kinks released a hit LP titled Give The People What They Want. One of the best ways to know what the people want is to look at the numbers. The web stats for IRC show a lot of interest among visitors for 2008 indie rock music. We're not sure why this is, but here's a playlist of excellent 2008 songs most of you have probably never heard, and all of which were sent to us In Dee Mail. We hope you find a few here that you really dig, and check out more about the artists and bands who recorded them.

The Dublin, Ireland mellow experimental pop band The Dying Seconds, released their self-titled debut LP last year. Their music is a flourishing and dreamy fusion of electronic grooves blended together with trumpet, violin, clarinet, Tunisian bagpipes, synthesizers and harmonophones at nearly every turn, making it one of the best indie releases of 2008. And others agree. The blog MP3Hugger wrote, "As albums go [The Dying Seconds] is up there with the best of 2008."

Croatian indie band The Orange Strips' 2008 album, Follow LP, is full of lush melodies, accordions, guitars and overall memorable folk rock. Right away, their Gin Blossoms meets The Clientele sound makes the LP one of the most under appreciated international indie rock releases of 2008.

The indie rock band Technicolor Wolves are definitely on the radar taking the prized Best New Band of the Coachella Valley in 2008, and recently named the Best Band-Overall in 2009 by the Palm Springs newspaper, The Desert Sun.

The first time that we heard "I Was Only Sleeping" from Hotel St. George it reminded us of The Walkmen. But finding out quickly that it was not The Walkmen made the mystery even more intriguing. Wish there was more time to write about all of these terrific songs and bands, but the music speaks for itself. Enjoy.

"I'll Make The Best Weapon" - The Dying Seconds from s/t debut (2008)
"Everything Always" - The Dying Seconds from s/t debut (2008)

"Northern Lights" - The Orange Strips from Follow LP (2008)

"Reaction" - Technicolor Wolves from Charismarithmetic EP (2008)
"Ceiling Cracks" - Technicolor Wolves from Charismarithmetic EP (2008)

"I Was Only Sleeping" - St. George Hotel from Hundreds & Thousands (2008)

jay reatardKicking off volume 10 of the Halloween Indie Rock Songs playlist mix series is the demonic rocker Jay Reatard. Following Reatard is a new Halloweenish song from the Montreal super group Clues. This year's 23rd annual The Bridge School Benefit concert fund-raiser held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mt. View, California, definitely had a more energetic, youth-oriented line-up than Neil Young's usual selections of classic rock and singer and songwriter that he relied on in years past. Saturday's seven-hour show included Wolfmother, Sheryl Crow, Chris Martin (Coldplay), No Doubt, Fleet Foxes, Monsters of Folk, Jimmy Buffett and Neil Young as the closer.

Along with his wife, Pegi, Young has been organizing the benefit concert since 1986. The cause is a great one, and makes purchasing a ticket more meaningful than most music concerts and festivals I go to. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Bridge School for children with severe physical impairments.

Following a set from ex-Bush member Gavin Rossdale (husband of Gwen Stefani), Wolfmother rocked out strummer-style with an all acoustic (three guitars), and one drummer, band, creating an incredibly big rock sound. No wonder why Aussie lead singer Andrew Stockdale is often compared to Robert Plant and his music like that of Led Zeppelin meets Black Sabbath. The band ripped into their classic "Woman" from their 2006 self-titled debut and treated the crowd to the title track, "Cosmic Egg," from their new album, out today on Interscope Records.

"Cosmic Egg" - Wolfmother from Cosmic Egg (2009)

Fleet Foxes were in their usual top form, but unfortuntately during their set, one of the big speakers was tripping out; thankfully, the technicians fixed the problem in time for the crowd to enjoy songs like "White Winter Hymnal" and "Mykonos." The recently formed super group Monsters of Folk, consisting of indie heroes like Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), M. Ward (Matt & Him) and Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes), played a riveting set of Americana rock punctured by fericious piano and guitar jams of songs off their debut album.

When Sheryl Crow took the stage, the crowd began to get more lively. Crow played a number of predictable songs and then covered The Beatles "Hide Your Love Away." Chris Martin added an intimate twist to a number of Coldplay songs, relying only on a piano and a violinist to deliver alternative versions of "Lost," "Clocks" and "Yellow." Martin also performed a semi-sloppy cover of the 1950s classic "Blue Angel" to close out his set.

By the time Jimmy Buffett got on stage to play for thousands of older margarita-drinking, grass-smoking fans, the place was bouncing. From all accounts, it was No Doubt, Chris Martin and Buffett that seemed to draw a huge slice of the crowd. Indie rock and folk still seems to escape the "mainstream"; but hey, that's OK, it makes it all the more special to those who love 'indie' and alternative music.

By the time the legendary Neil Young came on to close out the concert marathon, he proved he can still make his classics like "Sugar Mountain" and "I Am a Child." Clearly, Young's influence on much of the music we love today is all over indie rock and folk music. The set up for Young's performance took an unusually long time, and as the clock ticked towards midnight, people started to pack up and head out. But that didn't stop the large majority of the crowd who stayed to have a good time right to the end.

Unlike years past, there were no big collaborations on stage where members from bands in the lineup would normally join other bands and artists performing on stage. Not sure why that tradition of past Bridge School benefit concerts was largely missing, but it was a common observation among other concert reviewers. Many artists and bands in the lineup did join together for the finale to close out the first day of the two-day event.

The latest installment of the New Indie Releases playlist series presents a dozen hand-picked songs from a diverse selection of artists and bands that are either making a name for themselves, or reaffirming their relevance in a very saturated music market.

    Chapel Hill
, North Carolina has been the home base for bands like Ben Folds Five, Archers of Loaf, Doleful Lions, Polvo, Southern Culture on the Skids, among others. But perhaps the best "newest" export from Chapel Hill, the band Roman Candle, has delivered an indie rock-alt country/folk masterpiece with the release of their third LP, Oh Tall Tree in the Ear. The LP is chock full of memorable songs, brilliant lyrics, magnificent musicianship and stellar vocal delivery.

Following Roman Candle is a terrific new single "Day Glo" from Austin's progressive folk pop band Brazos. The band kicks off a dozen-plus city tour with spastic indie rock trio White Demin, and fellow Austinites, tomorrow night in Austin.

The next song, "Suicide Blues," from the Omaha band Brimstone Howl, offers up refreshingly ballsy guitar rock delivered in a punk (think Ramones) meets blues (think Velvet Underground) style heavy with attitude and determination. In 2006, the band had a mini-hit with the single Blood on the Rocks, Bones in the River, which was recorded and mixed by Jay Reatard. The following year, the band released their second LP, Guts of Steel, produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach. Brimstone Howl's newest LP will drop next month.

Plus, check out new music from Josh Rouse's new album that will drop in February 2010; a new demo from Say Hi; a cool hip hop track from Big Boi and guests; a remastered Nirvana classic; fresh grooves from Memory Tapes; a Sean Bones tune we missed earlier this year; and last, but not least, The Subjects return with the single "Winter Vacation" off their latest LP release.

"They Say" - Roman Candle from Oh Tall Tree in the Ear (2009)
Double-shot: "Modern Radio Is OK" - Roman Candle from Oh Tall Tree in the Ear (2009)
Flashback: "Winterlight" - Roman Candle from The Wee Hours Revue (2006)

"Day Glo" - Brazos, new single (2009)

"Suicide Blues" - Brimstone Howl from Big Deal. What's He Done Lately? (2009)

"Valencia" - Josh Rouse from El Turista (2009)

"November Was White, December was Grey" - Say Hi, demo leak (2009)

"Shine Blockas" - Big Boi w/Sir Lucious Leftfoot and Gucci Mane, single (2009)

"About A Girl" (remastered) - Nirvana from Bleach double-CD reissue (2009)

"Bicycle" - Memory Tapes from Seek Magic (2009)

"Dancehall" - Sean Bones from Rings (2009)

"Winter Vacation" - The Subjects from New Soft Shoe (2009)

The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir is not a gospel choir at all, but a rock band; and they're not even from London - their home base is Chicago. But the band's sound has an underlying influence of the post punk movement in the UK during the 1980s, with an indie rock predominance that includes joyous guitars, flourishes of horns and string arrangements and subject matter that ranges from disillusionment and betrayal to loneliness and STDs.

In case you haven't heard, the band was involved in a terrible accident on September 24 in which all of the members were hospitalized. The band was traveling to Cincinnati for their next gig to promote their excellent new album, And The Horse You Rode In On. The police reports say the band's 1999 Chevrolet van blew a tire, causing the van to roll over "multiple times in the grassy median."

The most seriously injured, Mark Yoshizumi, SYGC's bassist, was airlifted to hospital with leg, internal, and major head trauma injuries, where he is still listed in serious condition.

We send our sincerest thoughts, and wishes for a full and speedy recovery for the band. If you want to help, the band is accepting donations to help off-set their medical bills, buy new instruments and equipment, and other mounting costs (via PayPal to tsygc@bloodshotrecords.com.) There will also be a Halloween night benefit concert for the SYGC.

Their new album, And The Horse You Rode In On, is brilliant! SYGC's MySpace page lists among their influences Ernest Hemmingway, The National Pop League, Jackson Pollock, "vegetarians, teenage punks and Daniel Johnston's honesty."

"Tear Down the Opera House" - The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir from And The Horse You Rode In On (2009)

"Stop!" - The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir from And The Horse You Rode In On (2009)
Bonus (out of print): "Lamp Post" - The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir

    foolsgoldband

The next band in the Double Shots on the Rocks has been making a lot of buzz in 2009. They are LA's "tropical soul" band Fool's Gold, not to be confused with singer and songwriter Dan Folgenberg's back-up band of the same name from years ago.

Fool's Gold's nucleus consists of Luke Top and Lewis Pesacov, and at other times is supplemented by musicians from We Are Scientists (an awesome band, by the way) and The Fall (legendary post-punk pioneers). Peasacov also plays in Foreign Born, one of our favorite "new" bands of 2009 thanks to their stunning LP Person to Person. The band considers among their main influences Afropop music.

Fool's Gold debut, self-titled album dropped last month and has won critical acclaim from the mainstream press like The New York Times and music blogs, such as Pitchfork, and well, Indie Rock Cafe. Fool's Gold Luke Top hails from Israel and often sings in Hebrew on the band's exceptionally cheerful, infectious debut LP.

    "Surprise Hotel" - Fool's Gold from s/t debut (2009)

    "Nadine" - Fool's Gold from s/t debut (2009)

springtigersBradford Cox, of Deerhunter fame, has a new album, Logos, out today under his musical project and moniker Atlas Sound. The track below, "Walkabout," is one of the albums highlights, with Animal Collective's Noah Lennox (aka, Panda Bear) pitching in with his famously echoy, dreamy vocal delivery and feel good electronic musical arrangements. The song is clearly one of the best indie duets of 2009.

Next up is a catchy "new to us" indie pop band called Spring Tigers, who just so happen to be from Athens, Georgia, the birthplace of Bradford Cox. Today also marks the official release of Sufjan Stevens' BQE (nope, nothing to do with barbequing), which is basically an all orchestrated LP - and a good one at that. But there are still many of us who really hope he will pick back up on his '50 state' album concept; even a total of 10 would be an accomplishment. The idea came about in reaction to both critical and fan reaction to the albums Illinoise and Greetings From Michigan. (In the meantime, we started a playlist series that includes songs about states called the State of Music. More on that soon, so stay tuned).

Today's other indie releases include new material from Sufjan Stevens, Spiral Stairs, Port O'Brien, Neon Indian, F**k Buttons, The Hush Now, Abdelkbir Marchane & Ahmed Baqbou, Jon & Roy, Hawnay Troof, The Parlour Steps, The Wheat Pool and others. Some of the albums in this mix were released last week.

"Walkabout" (with Noah Lennox) - Atlas Sound from Logos (2009)

"Just Suggesting" - Spring Tigers from s/t debut (2009)
Double-shot: "New Improved Formula" - Spring Tigers from s/t debut (2009)

"Movement VI—Isorhythmic Night Dance with Interchanges" - Sufjan Stevens from BQE (2009)

"Maltese Terrier" - Spiral Stairs from The Real Feel (2009)

"Sandiya" - Abdelkbir Marchane & Ahmed Baqbou from Ouled Bambara: Portraits of Gnawa (2009)

"My Will Is Good" - Port O'Brien from Threadbare (2009)

"Deadbeat Summer" - Neon Indian from Psychic Chasms (2009)

"And I" - Hawnay Troof from Daggers at the Moon (2009)

"Hoping and Waiting" - The Hush Now from Constellations (2009)

"Olympians" - F**k Buttons from Tarot Sport (2009)

"Hold On" - Former Ghosts from Fleurs (2009)

"Little Pieces" - The Parlour Steps from Hidden Names (2009)

"This Is It" - The Wheat Pool from Hauntario (2009)

    "Self-Taught Learner" - Lissy Trulie from Self-Taught Learner (2009)

"Another Noon" - Jon & Roy from Another Noon (2009)

The long-awaited major movie adaptation of Maurice Sendak's timeless classic Where The Wild Things Are premiered in theaters nationwide this weekend. As everyone who has fond memories, and some scary ones too, of the words and illustrations that made the wild things an unforgettable tale, we are excited to see the much anticipated film by accomplished director Spike Jonze. The clip below shows Jonze and Sendak discussing the adaptation and also delves into why Sendak feels the film is a great compliment to his original work.

You can also view a number of HD You Tube video clips from the movie itself and view some of the related links we thought you might appreciate.

There is another vital aspect about the film that has received plenty of attention. The soundtrack. If you haven't already heard, the soundtrack for the film is the work of an impressive line-up of indie musicians, include Karen O herself, the lead singer for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the following artists:

    Bradford Cox (Deerhunter)
Brian Chase and Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
Dean Fertita ( The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs)
    Aaron Hemphill (Liars)
Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee)
Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs)
    Oscar Michel (Gris Gris)
Imaad Wasif (New Folk Implosion, Alaska)

"Where The Wild Things Are (Overture)" - Randall Woolf
"Where The Wild Things Are" - Chenard Walcker
"Where The Wild Things Are" - Metallica
"Where The Wild Things Roam" - ?Mystery Artist?

The following is a great behind-the-scenes video with Sendak talking about Jonze's film adaptation:

There's a lively debate about Sendak's comment in the Oct. 19 issue of Newsweek that parents concerned with the darkness of the movie "can go to hell." Geez...

Even though the beloved Bright Eyes may be a thing of the past, Conor Oberst continues to broaden his horizons with the Mystic River Valley Band, and more recently, Monsters of Folk. Oberst's cover of Daniel Johnston's "Devil Town" is just as impressive as everything else he touches, and it's a fitting start for the fifth volume of the Halloween Indie Rock Songs playlist series.

Mojave 3 weigh in with their own fantastic Halloween-ish type song - or at least how that's we're spinning it. Listening to "Ghost Ship Waiting" makes one yearn even more for a new album by the band that has given us so such special musical treats in the past.

The incredible 10+ minute guitar jam "Spiders" off Wilco's 2004 LP A Ghost Is Born is one of the finest crackly long jams this decade. Next, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult deliver one of the most unforgettable Adam Ant-like beats of the modern rock era on "Devil Bunnies," while Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds follow up with a similar-sounding beat, but this one is laden with a darker march, like a punk song on sleeping pills and a melodramatic story line; very much in the spirit of something Jim Morrison and The Doors would have recorded.

This playlist continues with stand out songs from Hexes and Ohs, Franz Ferdinand, Sufjan Stevens, Fire on Fire, Neon Blonde, Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper, Elliott Smith, Passion Pit and Say Hi To Your Mom.

"Devil Town" (Daniel Johnston) - Bright Eyes

"Ghost Ship Waiting" - Mojave 3

    "Spiders" - Wilco

"Devil Bunnies" - My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult

"Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!" - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

"Alive Until Saturday Night" - Hexes and Ohs

    "Twilight Omens" - Franz Ferdinand

"The Mistress Witch from McClure" - Sufjan Stevens

    "Hangman" - Fire on Fire

    "Princess Skullface" - Neon Blonde

"Hands of Death" - Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper

"Son of Sam" - Elliot Smith

"Eyes As Candles" - Passion Pit

Extra Treat: "These Fangs" - Say Hi To Your Mom

Now that'll be something; let's only hope they play at least one of the Floyd songs on Sunday as a teaser. Here's an audio clip only of Wayne Coyne talking about Syd Barret and performing a piano solo of the Floyd classic "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" on KCRW in 1999, and a live YouTube video of The Flaming Lips playing another Dark Side track, "Breathe."

Indie rock legends Built to Spill are back in a big way with their new LP, There Is No Enemy, which dropped last week. More than three years in the making, the album is a surprisingly impressive release; not to say they couldn't do it, but just that they have been seemingly drifting for years without a solid new record.

    Doug Martsch
lyrics have never been more personal: Like anyone assuming they know what makes us tick/I was just as wrong as I could be - from "Tomorrow"; occasionally bitter: Stay out of my nightmares, stay out of my dreams/ You're not even welcome in my memories - from "Things Fall Apart"; and, provocatively soul-searching: And if God does exist/I am sure He will forgive/Me for doubting Him/For He'd see/How unlikely He/Made Himself seem - from "Oh Yeah."

Additionally, the brilliant layering of spacious and tangled guitar jams (most evident on "Tomorrow" and "Good Ole' Boredom") and a propensity for fractured song formats - cornerstones of BTS's music since their beginning - sound better than ever. There are many memorable, enthralling and enjoyable moments on this LP, including crowd pleasers like "Aisle 13" and "Hindsight," as well as the remarkably beautiful ballads, "Life's A Dream" and "Nowhere Lullabye." Every track on this album is a keeper. Seriously.

When we got a preview of some of the new BTS material at this year's Outside Lands Festival, we were really impressed, but had no idea that There Is No Enemy would be this amazing. This album is yet another masterpiece from one of indie rock's truly iconic bands.

"Hindsight" - Built to Spill from There Is No Enemy (2009)
"Aisle 13" - Built to Spill from There Is No Enemy (2009)
"Life's A Dream" - Built to Spill from There Is No Enemy (2009)

Available since August, indie rock pioneers Modest Mouse's newest release, No One's First, And You're Next, is a collection of eight songs that date back to 2004, and therefore can't really be called the follow up LP to the successful, and widely praised, We Were Dead Even Before the Ship Sank, released in 2007.

Many of the songs from No One's First have been released over the years, including the darkly bizarre, "King Rat," which the late Heath Ledger directed the video for. And yet the EP holds up as the newest offering from the band, proving Modest Mouse haven't abandoned their quirky, yet strangely cool, song crafting, like on the fuzzy guitar jam, "History Sticks to Your Feet"; the blistering riffs of "The Whale Song"; and, the mostly spoken and shouted lyrics of "Guilty Cocker Spaniels." The band also present the respectable alt-country melodies of "Autumn Beds"; catchy songs meant to be singles - "Satellite Skin"; and even mix it up Dixie-style with the return of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on "Perpetual Motion Machine."

"The Whale Song" - Modest Mouse from No One's First, And You're Next (2009)
"Autumn Beds" - Modest Mouse from No One's First, And You're Next (2009)
"History Sticks to Your Feet" - Modest Mouse from No One's First, And You're Next (2009)

Despite their iconic stature in the world of hard rock, Pearl Jam's latest album, Backspacer, has received mostly lukewarm to poor reviews for one of the biggest rock bands of the past two decades. The common criticism, and one that is easy to latch on to, is that Backspacer is driven by, and dependent on, blazing formulated guitar riffs and Eddie Vedder's less than impressive vocal delivery (not sure who's to blame for that).

The major problem with Backspacer is that it's unimaginative; there's really nothing new here that makes us sit up and say, 'Wow, this is great.' PJ fans, of any age, will likely cherry pick their own keeper songs from the LP, like "Gonna See My Friend," the ballad-like cut "Just Breathe," or the acceptable "Amongst The Waves." But, for now, we'll relish in the classic PJ albums of the past (i.e., Ten) and hope that PJ can come up with something better next time. Backspacer proves the band can still rock; it just appears they've run out of ideas.

"The Fixer" - Pearl Jam from Backspacer (2009)

Next, what happens when former members of Arcade Fire, Unicorns, and Think About Life start a band? Well, you get the Clues, the latest Montreal buzz band that creates a big sound that mixes grinding guitar rock jams, melodic pop sound scapes and the falsetto-like vocals of frontman Alden Penner.

Also, check out new songs from Staten Island's experimental pop band Cymbals Eat Guitars; the phenomenally popular band, Paramore; Jersey City's retro-pop rock group The Black Hollies; Edinburgh's eclectic Meursault; London's hugely successful indie rock band, The Horrors; Brooklyn's electro-acoustic musician Argyle Johansen; the self-described Seattle 'ghettotech' blues band Black Whales; Mexico's grunge meets Britpop group Rubik; Canada's pop soul band The Rest; Minneapolis' psychedelic pop band Velvet Davenport; the gorgeous pop of Detroit's The Silent Years, and the UK's folk rock band Low La Love (abbreviated for practical reasons).

"Perfect Fit" - Clues from s/t debut (2009)
    Double-shot: "Cave Mouth" - Clues from s/t debut (2009)

"What Dogs See" - Cymbals Eat Guitars from Why There Are Mountains (2009)

"Brick By Boring Brick" - Paramore from Brand New Eyes (2009)

"Gloomy Monday Morning" - The Black Hollies from Softly Towards The Light (2009)

"Nothing Broke" - Meursault from Nothing Broke EP (2009)

"Sea Within A Sea" - The Horrors from Primary Colours (2009)

"A Sunny Day in Hell" - Argyle Johansen from s/t debut (2009)

"Books on Tape" - Black Whales from Origins (2009)

"Wasteland" - Rubik from Dada Bandits (2009)

"With Every Heartbeat" (Robyn cover) - The Rest from The Cried Wolf Book (2009)

"Lemon Drop Square Box" - Velvet Davenport from Lemon Drop Square Box (2009)

"Taking Drugs at the Amusement Park" - The Silent Years from Let Go (2009)

"Blackbird 3" - Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love from from Feels, Feathers, Bog and Bees (2009)

deadweatherhorehoundThe Dead Weather is a new alternative rock super group with a killer line-up: Jack White (The Raconteurs and The White Stripes), Alison Mosshart (The Kills and Discount), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs and The Greenhornes). The Dead Weather released their debut album, Horehound, last month - and it's a stunning LP, a must-have for any rock lover's music collection.

Thanks to Subpop Records for sending us a previously unreleased Nirvana cut, titled "Scoff," from the Bleach double-LP reissue, available now, with a limited pressing on white vinyl (white doesn't really fit Nirvana, but OK). Yesterday, Teepee Records sent over a new smoking track, "Strangers," from New York's praised psychedelic-rock band Hopewell, featuring Jason Russo, who was briefly a member of alternative rock icons Mercury Rev. Also, check out new songs, and MySpace pages, from recent and new releases by Langhorne Slim, David Mead, Bamboo Shoots, Reverie Sound Revue, Saintseneca, Fol Chen, Sun Bears, The Real Ones, and The Bygones.

"Treat Me Like Your Mother" - The Dead Weather from Horehound (2009)

"Scoff" (Live) - Nirvana from Bleach re-issue (2009)

"Island" - Hopewell from Good Good Desperation (2009)
Double-shot: "Stranger" - Hopewell from Good Good Desperation (2009)

"I Love You But Goodbye" - Langhorne Slim from Be Set Free (2009)

"Hey Girl" - Bamboo Shoots from Armour (2009)

"Rainy Weather Friend" - David Mead from Almost and Always (2009)

"Arrows" - Reverie Sound Revue from s/t debut (2009)

"God Bones" - Saintseneca from Saintseneca EP (2009)

"The Longer U Wait (ft. Simone White)" - Fol Chen from Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune's Made (2009)

"I'm Alive" - Sun Bears from Dream Happy Dreams (2009)

"Every Dog Has Its Day" - The Real Ones from All For The Neighbourhood (2009)

"Click On That (Smash The Plastic Death)" - The Bygones from By - (2009)

Bonus Material: Download the track "Frost" from the new album by Bell Orchestra, Arcade Fire's musical side project. By the way, AF announced last week a new LP is in the works.

beautifulsmallmachinesThere are plenty of indie artists and bands that have released great music in 2009. Some of the best have been published via the In Dee Mail (music sent directly to us) series; but surprisingly get little notice on other music sites and blogs. If you follow this site on a regular basis, you know that we regularly feature talented artists and bands that are rarely heard elsewhere; they all have one thing in common - they got our attention because their music stands out among the many other submissions we receive each month.

There is something very exciting, and special, about hearing good-to-stunning music that few other people know about. And there is no shortage of such music, by any means. Case in point is the New York City band Beautiful Small Machines?

The duo is Bree Sharp and Don DiLego that craft melodic electro-pop hooks and are admittedly "caught somewhere between the 70’s, 80’s and deep space". The title track of their new EP, Simple Joys, features Simon LeBon (Duran Duran) on vocals. Simple Joys drops October 13 via Elk Velvet Records, the day before a scheduled show at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York, October 20-24.

Jim Wallis of the London-based indie rock band, My Sad Captains, debuts with his electronic lo-fi solo album, "Fish/Fowl/Flood," under the moniker Looking Glass. Wallis' debut LP drops on Oct. 19. Also in this playlist are new songs from Florida rockers Inkwell; LA's alternative rock band Lemonwilde; the recently disbanded UK buzz group Calis Star; Chicago's punk band Cool Devices; Bi-coastal indie hipsters Esquimaux; Jersey City's melodramatic alt rockers Their Planes Will Block Out The Sun; pop experimentalists from Brooklyn Peephole; and UK indie group Mirror Kicks.

"Simple Joys" - Beautiful Small Machines from Simple Joys EP (2009)

"Ah La Ha" - Looking Glass from Fish Fowl Flood (2009)

"The Whale The Whale The Whale!!!" - Inkwell from Rivers of Blood and Sadness, or Maybe Happy (2009)

"Just Like An Ashtray" - Lemonwilde from Red Room EP (2009)

"The Goodwill Robot" - Carlis Star from Bedroom Demos (2009)

"Primitive" - Cool Devices from s/t debut (2009)

"Guilty Boat" - Peephole from Cold Dime EP (2009)

"In The Night" - Esquimaux from Wolf EP (2009)

"Teflon Kids" - Their Planes Will Block Out The Sun from White Dancer (2009)

"Turning It Up" - Mirror Kicks, digital single (2009)

There will be more installments of the In Dee Mail series in the coming weeks, spotlighting dozens of impressive songs you've probably never heard. At the end of this year, we're going to have a huge special edition, titled The Greatest of In Dee Mail, highlighting the best songs published on IRC throughout 2009.

Local Natives is a Los Angeles indie rock band that we first heard via the legendary British mag New Music Express' website, and immediately dug their self-described "jungle rock" sound. Their debut album, Gorilla Manor, comes out on November 2, and will be backed up with a November-December U.S. tour together with bands like White Rabbits, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Fool’s Gold. Below are two awesome songs from Gorilla Manor via NME.com.

The iconic indie musician Daniel Johnston's new album, Is And Always Was, dropped on Tuesday, and we're loving it; looking forward to seeing him later this month when Johnston stops in San Francisco as part of his current concert tour. Below is feature a free, legal MP3 from the new record titled "Freedom." You can purchase the album directly from Johnston's colorful website Hi, How Are You?, named after his 1993 album that was regularly 'advertised' by Kurt Cobain.

Straight outta of Brooklyn is a band we heard over at Stereogum called the Freelance Whales. Plus, check out these awesome new songs from The Bright Light Social Hour, Annuals, Rubik, Two Hours Traffic, Baaba Maal, Black Whales, The Honey Brothers, Mew, Avett Brothers, Simon Joyner and Julie Peel. There's a general feeling around here that many of the tracks in this playlist will end up on our 'best of 2009' lists.

"Sun Hands" - Local Natives from Gorilla Manor (2009)
Bonus: "Stranger Things" - Local Natives from Gorilla Manor (2009)

"Freedom" - Daniel Johnston from Is And Always Was (2009)

"Generator First Floor" - Freelance Whales, single (2009)

"Back and Forth" - The Bright Light Social Hour from s/t EP (2009)

"The Giving Tree" - Annuals, single release via IGIF (2009)

"Wasteland" - Rubik from Dada Bandits (2009)

"Territory" - Two Hours Traffic from Territory (2009)

"Television" - Baaba Maal from Television (2009)

"Young Blood" - Black Whales from Origins EP (2009)

"Demonstration" - The Honey Brothers from Demonstration EP (2009)

"Repeaterbeater" - Mew from No More Stories Are Told Today... (2009)

"Kick Drum Heart" - The Avett Brothers from I and Love and You (2009)

"Out Into The Snow" - Simon Joyner from Out Into The Snow (2009)

"Unfold" - Julie Peel from Near The Sun (2009)

For more like these, check out the 2009 Indie Songs page featuring dozens and dozens of free, legal MP3s. One of the great things about this relationship between labels, bands, unsigned artists and all of you is that many of you end up supporting, in some way, the artists whose music you dig, and that which you may have otherwise never known about if this 'new music model' did not exist.

washedoutmusicLargely due to the availability of affordable technology and the explosion of the Internet in recent years, independent musicians are finding it easier than ever before to record, distribute and promote their music. In the last installment of this series, we featured Portland's Channel In, Channel Out. Today, IRC spotlights three one-man bands, including the indie buzz 'band' Washed Out, the UK's Stuart Newman and San Francisco's Labardor Labratories.

Washed Out is the moniker of a solo musical project by Georgia native Ernest Greene. Washed Out’s debut EP Life Of Leisure is a perfect soundtrack for a lazy afternoon; the EP title suits Greene's chill, retro lo-fi electronic sound perfectly. Rolling Stone described Washed Out's music as "impossibly gorgeous pop that mixes up woozy synthesizers, droney shoegaze textures and funky, sometimes danceable beats."

    stuartnewman

Melancholy reigns in the song "51st State" by UK songwriter and musician Stuart Newman. As an unsigned artist, Newman, 22, has total control over every aspect of his music. Many times this turns out to be a good thing, as evidenced by Newman's debut, self-released album, Single But Defective.

Based in Brighton, Newman's music is best described as acoustic pop. He cites among his biggest influences Elliot Smith, The Beatles, Paul Simon and Nirvana. Interestingly, Newman is right-handed, but plays exclusively left-handed on guitar and other instruments. He has been featured on BBC6 Music, BFBS Radio and "gas stations throughout Connecticut on the AMP Radio Network."

Newman’s new album, Single But Defective, is available as a free download, with the idea, he said, to "spread the music far and wide internationally." Sweet.

    labra

San Francisco indie musician Labrador Labratories, or "Labra," creatively mixes influences of Serbian traditional music with dreamy psychedelic folk that conjure up images of a younger Leonard Cohen playing with an European gypsy band. This is apparent on Labra's newly released EP Open Cage, featuring songs like "Your Arms" and "Butterflies". Labra lists among the instruments he plays as "guitars, voice, knees and harmonica".

Labra says he was conceived when a Vegas stripper named Miley went on a trip to Burma, meet a monk and returned home to California two weeks pregnant. When he was six years old, Labra went to live with his Serbian grandmother in West Hollywood where he was home schooled, and became a "devout" Catholic and choir boy.

In the next installment of In Dee Mail's one-man band series, we will highlight the music of a Tampa area experimental ambient folk musician, a Montreal artist who sounds a bit like Prince mixed with Hall and Oates, and an alternative rocker from the lakes region of Michigan.

Yesterday's Post: The first installment of Halloween Indie Songs was a huge success, featuring songs from Arctic Monkeys, Spoon, Cat Power, Beck, Beach House, Flaming Lips and many others.

The second playlist of that series will feature Halloweenish music from Sufjan Stevens, Pavement, The Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Cut Copy and eight other bands and artists. By Halloween Eve, we'll have published a total of 13 playlists, each featuring 13 songs.

As some of you probably know, Tuesdays are typically the big day of the week for new releases, and this week is no exception, featuring new stuff from Vampire Weekend, No Age, Devendar Banhart, The Clientele, Neon Indian, Spiral Beach, Le Loup, The Perms and many others. Today, Vampire Weekend made available a free MP3 titled "Horchata" off their upcoming sophomore album, Contra, due for release in early January 2010.

To everyone at San Francisco's 10th annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival (that also featured performances from Neko Case, Dr. Dog, Galactic, World Party and many other 'hardly bluegrass' artists and bands) this past weekend, thanks for the great time and special thanks to billionaire Warren Hellman, for the free, three-day festival in Golden Gate Park - it was amazing! Rolling Stone online is reporting that more people - some 500,000 - attended the SF fest - "more than Coachella, Lollapalooza and All Points West combined." We were also intrigued by San Francisco's own The Ferocious Few, a lo-fi, garage rock duo.

Up next for San Francisco area music lovers, The Treasure Island Festival on October 17 & 18, featuring The Flaming Lips, The Decemberists, Grizzly Bear, The Walkmen, MGMT, Beirut, Yo La Tengo and dozens more! IRC will be doing a pre-show feature and coverage from the festival (follow us on Twitter for more on that). The new indie film East of Sunset examines the indie rock music scene in communities east of the Sunset Strip, such as Silverlake and Echo Park. The film features LA-area popular bands like The Happy Hallows, The Henry Clay People, Le Switch, The Transmissions, The Movies, plus bands and artists that broke out from the strip to a national and international audience over the years, including indie rockers like Silversun Pickups, Everest, Beck, Elliott Smith, Earlimart and The Airborne Toxic Event.

In addition to performances, the film features interviews with Los Angeles music writers and DJs as well as band members of some of the most popular of the hundreds of bands and artists making the scene in east LA. The film was produced and directed by Ryan Maples and it is being distributed in partnership with Thrillhouse Productions. Check out http://www.EastofSunsetFilm.com
