  • This is the finale for the Halloween Indie Rock Songs playlist mix series (back to regular programming on Monday with a lot of great new music). Unlike the other mixes, Vol. 13 is not limited to 13 songs because there are just too many left over to share with all of you. What better way to start off the last mix than with the newest track from Radiohead, "These Are My Twisted Words."

Following Radiohead is a track from Of Montreal (photo, above), plus a song from the now-defunct indie supergroup called the North American Halloween Prevention Initiative. The song, "Do They Know It's Halloween?" was co-written by Islands, and ex-Unicorns, member Nicholas Diamonds along with an ensemble that included members of bands like Arcade Fire, Rilo Kiley, Wolf Parade, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beck, Sonic Youth, Les Savy Fav, Buck 65 and Peaches.

Great Halloween-Theme Songs Exclusively from 2009

"Heads" is the first UK radio single from the Herm's 2009 album, Monsters. The song's bopping sound cleverly disguises its otherwise ghoulishly odd lyrics that suggest cannibalism of the author himself, who strangely seems to find solace in his own demise: Step one/rub me down with grease/step two/cook me in the fire/Step three/cut me into pieces/eat me when I’m done.

"Heads" - Herm from Monsters (2009)

"Land of Freak" - King Khan and The Shrines from From What Is?! (2009)

"Wicked Guy" - Jack of Heart from s/t debut (2009)

"Ghost on the Canvas" - Paul Westenberg from PW & the Ghost Gloves Cat Wing Joy Boys EP (2009)

"Young Blood" - Black Whales from Origins EP (2009)

"Tricky Tricky" - Royksopp from Junior (2009)

"Hell" - Tegan & Sara from Sainthood (2009)

"All My Exorcisms" - Beaujolais from Admiration (2009)

"Locked in the Basement" - Fredrik from Trilogi (2009)

"Pink Sabbath" - Dananananaykroyd from Pink Sabbath (2009)

"Cry Wolf" - Stuart Newman from Single But Defective (2009)

Even though the beloved Bright Eyes may be a thing of the past, Conor Oberst continues to broaden his horizons with the Mystic River Valley Band, and more recently, Monsters of Folk. Oberst's cover of Daniel Johnston's "Devil Town" is just as impressive as everything else he touches, and it's a fitting start for the fifth volume of the Halloween Indie Rock Songs playlist series.

Mojave 3 weigh in with their own fantastic Halloween-ish type song - or at least how that's we're spinning it. Listening to "Ghost Ship Waiting" makes one yearn even more for a new album by the band that has given us so such special musical treats in the past.

The incredible 10+ minute guitar jam "Spiders" off Wilco's 2004 LP A Ghost Is Born is one of the finest crackly long jams this decade. Next, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult deliver one of the most unforgettable Adam Ant-like beats of the modern rock era on "Devil Bunnies," while Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds follow up with a similar-sounding beat, but this one is laden with a darker march, like a punk song on sleeping pills and a melodramatic story line; very much in the spirit of something Jim Morrison and The Doors would have recorded.

This playlist continues with stand out songs from Hexes and Ohs, Franz Ferdinand, Sufjan Stevens, Fire on Fire, Neon Blonde, Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper, Elliott Smith, Passion Pit and Say Hi To Your Mom.

"Devil Town" (Daniel Johnston) - Bright Eyes

"Ghost Ship Waiting" - Mojave 3

    "Spiders" - Wilco

"Devil Bunnies" - My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult

"Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!" - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

"Alive Until Saturday Night" - Hexes and Ohs

    "Twilight Omens" - Franz Ferdinand

"The Mistress Witch from McClure" - Sufjan Stevens

    "Hangman" - Fire on Fire

    "Princess Skullface" - Neon Blonde

"Hands of Death" - Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper

"Son of Sam" - Elliot Smith

"Eyes As Candles" - Passion Pit

Extra Treat: "These Fangs" - Say Hi To Your Mom
